YA@K

What it says on the tin

You’ll never guess what our Missional Community is about! We are a group of Young Adults who are at King’s Church! Working with people aged 16-30, we spend lots of time together socially, getting to know God better and trying to make a difference in our community.

Are you aged between 16 and 30? If so, YA@K may just be the Missional Community for you. We believe that this generation has the potential to truly make a difference in our world. We want to create a space where people can enjoy being together, where we can get to know God better and where we can really make an impact in our culture and community.

Our half-termly rhythm for gatherings consists of:

  • YAK – a time to relax and talk about the teaching from the previous Sunday, to see how that applies to our lives.
  • Herding – chill-out time with the lads and ladies meeting separately, often in a pub or over food, to support one another and to learn from one another about being disciples who make other disciples.
  • Grazing – food and prayer is a good description of this session!
  • Stampede – an outward focus, where we may do some kind of social action or a real opportunity to invite friends who aren’t followers of Jesus.
  • Locking Horns – relaxed, often with food, discussion around a pressing issue of the day (usually a lively night and good fun!).
  • Watering Hole – simply a time to go out and eat together.

The point is that these evenings are a focus during the week, but we are doing life together and so we meet informally throughout the week – we want to be a family on mission!

Ground shaking

People often ask about the name, ‘YA@K’. Well, it is simply an acronym of Young Adults @ King’s, but having done some research, we quite like the animal now too! The yak is the friendliest of the bovine creatures. It survives best on the mountain top and helps other members of it’s herd to stay on the mountains whenever possible. Here’s the big one for us though; when yaks move together, the ground literally shakes. We want to be a community of people who figuratively make the ground shake, when we move together to make a difference.
